Welcome to Ireh Biz Life, a blog built on nearly 20 years of real-world experience opening and operating independent restaurants in Greater Vancouver, Canada.
This site was created to share practical lessons learned not only from successful decisions, but also from mistakes, unexpected challenges, and difficult choices that came with running restaurants day after day.
The goal is simple: to help current and future restaurant owners make better decisions before costly mistakes happen.
Nearly 20 Years of Real Restaurant Experience
My restaurant experience was built through actual operations—not simply through studying business theory.
Over the years, I have been involved in the everyday decisions that independent restaurant owners face: choosing locations, understanding target customers, developing menus, setting prices, controlling food costs, managing inventory, hiring and training employees, building kitchen systems, handling customer complaints, and maintaining consistent quality.
Some decisions worked well. Others did not.
In fact, some of the most valuable lessons came from decisions that did not produce the results I expected.
For example, I learned that a restaurant concept that succeeds in one location does not automatically succeed in another. The same menu can produce very different results when the target customers, location, and market conditions are different.
That experience changed the way I think about the restaurant business.
There is no perfect restaurant—only the right restaurant for the right customers in the right location.
Practical Lessons from Success and Mistakes
Restaurant owners make decisions every day that affect both customers and profitability.
A menu decision affects food cost. A hiring decision affects customer service. A portion decision affects both customer value and profit. A location decision can influence the entire future of the business.
Over the years, I learned that successful restaurant management is rarely about one big secret.
It is usually about making many small decisions correctly and consistently.
That is why the articles on Ireh Biz Life focus on practical questions that restaurant owners actually face.
What You Will Find Here
The Restaurant Business Success Series covers topics including:
- Restaurant startup planning and hidden costs
- Choosing the right location and understanding target customers
- Buying an existing restaurant versus starting from scratch
- Menu selection, pricing, and customer value
- Food cost and inventory management
- Standard recipes and kitchen systems
- Employee hiring, training, and retention
- Customer service and reputation management
- Quality control, productivity, and profitability
These subjects are connected.
A restaurant cannot solve profitability by looking only at food cost. It cannot build customer loyalty through food alone. And it cannot maintain consistency without good employees and reliable systems.
The purpose of this series is to show how these decisions work together in a real restaurant business.
Our Philosophy
Several principles have shaped the way I think about restaurants after nearly 20 years in the business.
Understanding your target customer is more important than simply having a large startup budget.
Money can help build a restaurant, but money cannot correct a concept that does not fit its customers.
There is no perfect restaurant—only the right location for your customers.
A location should not be judged simply by rent, traffic, or appearance. The most important question is whether the customers you want to serve are already there.
Good systems create consistency, and consistency builds a stronger business.
A restaurant should not depend entirely on one talented chef, one excellent employee, or the owner personally watching every detail.
Recipes, training, kitchen systems, quality control, and clear standards help the restaurant deliver consistent results.
Customer trust is one of the most valuable assets a restaurant can build.
Great food may bring customers in, but consistent food, good service, and respectful treatment give them reasons to return.
Why Ireh Biz Life?
Starting or operating a restaurant can involve expensive decisions.
A mistake in location, menu, pricing, staffing, lease decisions, or cost control can affect the business for years.
Ireh Biz Life was created because many of these lessons are easier to understand after you have experienced them—but by then, the lesson can be expensive.
I want to share what I learned so that other restaurant owners and future entrepreneurs can ask better questions before investing their time, money, and energy.
This site does not promise a shortcut to success.
Every restaurant, market, and customer base is different.
Instead, I share practical principles and real experiences that readers can consider when making their own business decisions.
Looking Ahead
Restaurant business experience is currently the main focus of Ireh Biz Life.
As the site grows, the broader goal is to continue sharing practical lessons about business and food based on real experience rather than theory alone.
Success taught me what worked. Mistakes often taught me why. Ireh Biz Life was created to share both.
Thank you for visiting Ireh Biz Life.
